Pat'd Sept 22 1874 (that 4 could be a 1).  Nice pendulum which appears to be brass is very ornate and has a raised bust of Mercury? on bob itself.  Case, measuring approx 17 1/4"  tall, 13" wide at base, 4 1/2" deep, is made of walnut.

Amount the Ebay shipping calculator shows is for case, movement, bell & pendulum.  If you do not want the case, please let us know either before the auction ends or right after and I will adjust the shipping fee to be for the other parts only.

History of Seth Thomas Adamantine Antique Mantel Clocks

In the 1860’s, French clocks in slate, onyx or marble cases became popular in the United States. These cases were expensive, so the American clock manufacturers produced similar looking cases made of iron or wood. These clocks have become known to collectors as “Black Mantel Clocks”, and were popular from 1880 to 1931.

Seth Thomas made clocks in marble cases for a short time, from 1887 to ca. 1895. They also made clocks in iron cases finished in black enamel, from 1892 to ca. 1895. Seth Thomas is well known for their “Adamantine” black mantel clocks, which were made starting in 1882. Adamantine is a celluloid veneer, glued to the wood case. Adamantine veneer was made in black and white, and in colored patterns such as wood grain, onyx and marble.

Adamantine veneer was developed by the Celluloid Manufacturing Company of New York City, and was covered by U.S. Patent number 232,037, dated September 7, 1880. Seth Thomas Clock Company purchased the right to use the Adamantine veneer in 1881.

Manufacture Dates of Seth Thomas Adamantine Antique Mantel Clocks

The movement provides a guide to the date of an Adamantine clock. At first, most Adamantine clocks used a modified shelf clock movement (called the “hip” movement because of its shape) with the escapement outside the back plate. Around 1900, the model 89 movement was introduced, having the escapement between the plates. The two types can be distinguished from the front of the clock by the position of the regulating square. The back escapement type (up to ca. 1901*) has the regulating square above the numeral “12”. The model 89 has the regulating square below the center of the dial.

Many Seth Thomas clocks from 1881 to 1918 have a date code stamped in ink on the case back or bottom. Usually, the year is done in reverse, followed by a letter A - L representing the month. For example, April 1897 would appear as 7981 D. Below are two examples:

Above: Date stamp from the bottom of an Adamantine case. The date is September 1892.

Antique Mantel Clock w/ ORNATE GILDED FACE & Pillars & GILDED FEET & Handles

Up for auction here is an old antique mantel clock.  The only maker's mark we could find is on the very ornate gilded face which simply reads "S" and "F" on either side of the 12:00 o'clock location.  This is a beautiful "petite" style of mantel clock and only measures 17 inches across, 7-1/2 inches deep and 11 inches tall.  The key and pendulum is also included here.  The clock is key wind and winds "towards the center" on each side.  The clock is still ticking as I am listing this, but we have not heard it chime.  It looks like there is a little pin holding the hands in place and maybe that's why we are not hearing it chime... not sure.  It may need some adjustment or repair... we are not sure as this is an estate sale find.  It has beautiful ebonized wood with a lovely carved vine and leaf design.  The columns on either side are a beautiful pale creamy marbleized color and the clock has decorative metal feet and side handles.  You will see a bit of wear to the top of the wood case.  Wish we knew more about this clock.  The back of the clock has the sticker from the original jeweler's shop that originally sold it.  It reads "M.L Cooveri, the Leading Jeweler & Optician , Vancouver, Wash. Repairing and Engraving."  Beautiful old item well worth the very low starting bid!

Shipping price includes delivery confirmation and insurance.  Please ask any and all questions prior to bidding as this is an AS-IS, NO return auction!  We do  not know much about clocks and this one may need repair in order for it to work properly.  We have described it to the best of our ability.  Thanks for looking!

CLOCK UPDATE:  We just heard it chime... it WORKS!!!  Yay!  Nice sound too!

Antique Ingraham Clock Co GILA Gingerbread Calender Mantel Clock Wall Shelf

With your winning bid you will receive this clock in very good condition. Measurements are approximately 23" tall x 15" wide x 4 3/4" deep. This great old estate find clock has it's original patina and is as found condition. I am not a clock expert, but with some leveling and playing around I got the clock to run and ran it for about an hour. It ran fine other than losing about a minute. It gonged 4 times at 2:00. I think at the very least it may need cleaning and some adjustment. The only bad things I can find worth mentioning, and they're all shown in the pictures, is there is a mild horizontal sepatation in the wood back plate, the clock face has dark spots, and there's some mild fading to the gold coloring on the glass. As usual, low start price and no reserve, with your satisfaction guaranteed, or your money back. I've done my best to picture and describe everything, but if you have any additional questions, I will try to respond promptly. Very low start price and no reserve. Bid with confidence...you will not be disappointed. Whenever possible, I am glad to combine shipping if you win multiple items.

I will mail package within 2-3 days after payment has been received. I pack very carefully and ship via Parcel Post or US Priority. Insurance is an option and is recommended.

Thanks for looking........GOOD LUCK BIDDING!

ANTIQUE WM. GILBERT BEEHIVE TIME STRIKE PARLOR MANTEL KITCHEN SHELF ALARM CLOCK

NICE WM. L. GILBERT BEEHIVE 8 DAY PARLOR MANTEL OR KITCHEN SHELF ALARM CLOCK!

Antique Wm. L. Gilbert kitchen or parlor alarm clock...Beehive design and style with a wonderful beehive tablet. Tablet may be a replacement as it is in very good condition with a clear image and not wear noted. Great look and a wonderful Victorian era example. Door opens and closes on good hinges. Inside, we have an original dial with some yellowing and usage wear...hands appear as original to the clock, and are in fine condition. The brass time and strike movement is correct, but unmarked as far as we can determine. The clock does carry a small paper label at the bottom interior of the case, reading Wm. L. Gilbert Clock & Co., Winchester, Conn. Back side of the case does show some evidence that screws for movement attachment may have been replaced, and perhaps the 8 day works were also at some point. After many years in storage with the estate holders collection, when wound, the clock started right up and continued to run. Gong strike and the hour is functioning although it is a bit noisy. Alarm system is in place as well as the metal bell strike. Measures in at about 20" tall. As with all of our estate timepieces and clocks, we highly recommend a professional cleaning with final adjustments after shipment to you, for proper working accuracy. Ask questions if you have them...will be carefully packed and shipped promptly upon confirmation of your payment.

We prefer our clients to have Public, rather than Private feedback.

International bidders are required to pay via Paypal within 48 hours of close...NO EXCEPTIONS! Items will be shipped USPS PRIORITY MAIL ONLY...absolutely no First Class Mail, so please do not ask. CUSTOMS CHARGES are separate and not part of your payment to this seller...they are within your own country are your obligation upon arrival of the shipment.

USA Bidders: Your payment is due within 4 days from auction close .

Please use the checkout system with ebay (Pay Now Button) or pay using the invoice forward to you at the close of auction.

Additional Packaging Requests: We have received a few requests to "double box" our items. While we take great care to pack our items normally, we do not generally double box. To do so adds to the weight and expense for shipping. Please be aware that if you make this request, you must do so prior to paying as your invoice must be adjusted to accommodate the additional shipping weight. Do not wait until paying to include a "note" with your payment, as we may then be unable to comply with your request.

Please note:  We care about your item! We pack carefully, as if it will be our own, taking great care using GREEN packaging when possible. A handling fee ($.50 - $3.00) per item is occasionally charged and is included in the shipping costs quoted in the shipping calculator below. Please check it before bidding.
