This is truly a great clock; it is in all original condition and has not been messed with at all, even has its original pendulum! The case of this clock is extremely beautiful with dark black adamantine finish (not painted) in all around in near perfect condition. (See pictures) This is very rare as usually this type of finish is all cracked with pieces broken and missing. It is a very classy mantle clock in need of a warm loving home. It was made circa 1896. The movement runs very well and keeps good time. This clock will not need servicing for many years to come, and is ready for the next 100 years! This is a labor intensive service, with many clockmakers charging 250.00 and up. We recommend having it oiled every 2 to 3 years to keep it in tip-top shape! With the purchase of this clock for an additional $ 2.25 we will include an oiler kit with a professional oiler loaded with enough oil to oil approximately 50 clocks with easy instructions so you could even do it yourself! The Seth Thomas Clock Company was begun in 1810 by Seth Thomas Sr. and has been known for making high quality clocks. With this clock being one of the best models. Adamantine is an animal of a different color. They are getting extremely popular now. In the 1860’s, French clocks in slate, onyx or marble cases became popular in the United States. These cases were expensive, so the American clock manufacturers produced similar looking cases made of iron or wood. These clocks have become known to collectors as “Black Mantel Clocks”, and were popular from 1880 to 1931. Seth Thomas is well known for their “Adamantine” black mantel clocks, which were made starting in 1882. Adamantine is a celluloid veneer, glued to the wood case. Adamantine veneer was made in black and white, and in colored patterns such as wood grain, onyx and marble. Adamantine veneer was developed by the Celluloid Manufacturing Company of New York City, and was covered by U.S. Patent number 232,037, dated September 7, 1880. Seth Thomas Clock Company purchased the right to use the adamantine veneer in 1881. Almost perfect, just has a few small bumps from years of faithful service. I doubt if the clock has been worked on very much as the screws and screw holes for the movement are tight, with no additional screw holes. The fancy dial is all-original and in wonderful condition for its age, aged to a nice patina. It has an adjustment for fast and slow on the dial which can be turned by the small end of the key, this way you don't need to take the clock down from its shelf to adjust it for slow and fast. The metal around the dial (solid brass) is original and is aged to a very beautiful patina (no extra screw holes, no dents etc.). The hands are original and perfect (see picture). Still has its original feet. Includes its original 6 "pillars" (rare for sure) on the front. All of the fancy decorations and pillars are original and perfect, unbelievable! The movement is signed (see picture). Complete with the old original very heavy (makes timekeeping very accurate) pendulum and a heavy duty double-ended key, one end for winding the clock and one end for adjusting the time for slow and fast. Not always the first on the scene with the latest movement "improvement" or flashy case style, Seth Thomas was slow to adopt changes and only when the marketplace had given it acceptance to other companys' breakthrough advances would Seth Thomas slowly and carefully bring their high quality clocks to the marketplace. The results, however, were always the same. When the Seth Thomas clock arrived it was an instant success and it captured the market. Again, this clock runs really great! The clock is large and measures 12 ½ inches high, 7 inches deep and 16 inches wide. These antique clocks amaze me - could you imagine any other consumer product still working after over 100 years! And the truly amazing thing with proper care they will work easily past the next 100 years, with this clock going well beyond that! If you are looking for an antique clock that has all its original parts and looks like it was cherished its whole life this is it! The buyer will not be disappointed! Each one has a unique quality, as well as appreciating in value and beauty with age. You will become attached to your antique clocks and they will become a meaningful and important part of your life adding untold joy each day you own them. They can be handed down from one generation to another as they increase daily in value. Antique clocks serve many purposes other than being useful in telling time, decorative in your home, a valuable asset in your estate and above all a faithful servant and friend which will be true to you to the end of time. my wife Donna, receiving a perfect "10" from a gracious customer. To insure a safe delivery and the buyer is to pay $23.50 for shipping, packing and ins. I will gladly answer any emails promptly. I have always hated that "reserve" when I have bid myself so this fine clock has no reserve and a very very (gulp) low starting bid. We love these clocks and I will be glad to help you set up your new clock, or answer questions long after the sale via email. We try to describe these clocks as accurately as we can, and include lots of pictures, (eBay allows 12 maximum) using just about every angle. We go over them thoroughly, and if they're dirty or need overhauling, we clean and overhaul them. Antiques, if they've had normal use, will have age-appropriate wear, which adds character rather than detracting. (WAY TOO much wear will, of course, detract.) Older clocks had to be transported over rough, unpaved roads in horse and buggy, buckboards, and maybe even Conestoga wagons.
We test them out here before shipping and guarantee they will work for you, but due to shipment trauma, (why do some UPS and USPS people feel they have to treat packages so roughly?) there may be small adjustments necessary, which we are glad to help you with. We include several pages of setup/adjustment instructions, help via emails and do phone surgery! In extreme cases we ask folks to send the clock back to us to adjust for them and we return them ASAP at our expense.
We also offer a clock oiler (at our cost, with the purchase of a clock) and instructions for oiling your own clock, should you choose to do that.
Pay Pal accepted. Thank you very much for looking.
