Presented for your bidding pleasure is this SUPERIOR mantel clock manufactured by SETH THOMAS probably in the early 1920's. This type of clock is variously referred to as a mantel clock, steeple clock, cabinet clock, tombstone clock, etc.. The descriptive names it has acquired over the years seems to vary with the whim of the person looking at it. Suffice to say it is a STUNNING example of a truly ANTIQUE clock.
The case of this clock is mahogany which has aged to a beautiful dark patina. The case is in excellent condition - no nicks, dings, scrapes on the front or the sides. There is one small scrape (?) on the top curve of the back door. The back door opens and closes properly. Please note the original operating instructions still attached to the inside of the back door. The case measures 8 inches wide by 10.5 inches high by 5.5 inches deep.
The dial is in top condition for a clock of this age. It is a silvered dial showing no signs of its' age. There are no key marks around the winding holes and the dial itself shows no scrapes or wear spots. The hands are the original Seth Thomas hands having the S and the T incorporated into the hands themselves. While the winding key is not the original it is properly sized to both the winding shafts and the clock speed adjustment shaft.
The movement of this clock is Seth Thomas' tried and true 89 movement. This movement was the workhorse on Seth Thomas' line of clock for many decades. The movement has been recently completely refurbished - all necessary work was done to ensure this movemnt to be in top running condition. A light lubrication in four or five years should be all that is necessary to keep the movement in good running condition. The clock strikes the half-hour and counts the hours on a nice sounding coiled gong.
Clocks as nice as this one come along only rarely and as the years go by they become even scarcer. One has only to follow auction results to see that the appreciation in value of these timepieces continues to be significant.
Because this is an estate find, no representations are made other than what can be seen in the pictures and read in the description. Relative condition is always a matter of opinion, however, we make every effort to describe our offerings with complete accuracy - our feedback is excellent, attesting to our past experiences on eBay.
Unless we specify otherwise in the description. all the timepieces we offer for auction are complete and running. Most of the clocks we auction approach 100 years of age, some are older than that. Therefore, there are no running guarantees unless the description so specifies. Adjustments may be needed after you receive your clock - packing and shipping often may affect the operation of the clock. We will make every effort to assist you in the event that this occurs, however, we are not responsible for these adjustments.
Your clock will be carefully packed so as to ensure its' safe arrival to your home. Sturdy boxes and lots of packing material will be used in order to accomplish this. As always, we are available via e-mail or phone to assist you in getting your new timepiece up and running. Should you have questions regarding this auction item or wish additional specific pictures, please e-mail us and we will answer ASAP>
